THE LESSON
Playing 7,289 yards as par 70, the raptor course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona offers thrilling challenges that command respect from players through high-stakes play of risk and reward. The Tom Fazio-designed course runs over the gently rolling hills and through the shaded natural arroyos found in this scenic corner of the Sonoran Desert. Most of Raptor’s fairways are generous and the greens are wide with large undulations. Misses tend to find deep greenside bunkers and grass collecting areas, making running up and down a real test of the short game. The Grayhawk Raptor course is one of only two Scottsdale golf courses to have hosted a PGA TOUR event, with the course hosting the Frys.com Open from 2007 to 2009. Among other tour-sanctioned tournaments played at Raptor , include the first Williams World Challenge, the Andersen Consulting World Golf Championship and the Phoenix Open waste management pro ams.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH MALLOY
“We are delighted to be here. The final or the national championship, whenever you can be here and it’s your last week of the season, that’s your goal. We just have to give ourselves a chance over four rounds. and put us in a good position to enter match play.”

REBELS IN POLLS
Ole Miss enters the 2022 NCAA Championships ranked as the No. 23 team in the nation according to Golfstat. The Rebels also hold a No. 24 ranking in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate Team Rankings. Which disc golf set is the best?

A quality disc golf set includes everything you need to start playing and will likely serve you well for years. Although almost all sets include a putter, mid-range disc and driver, the number of discs per set and the quality of the plastic may vary. Our top pick is a reliable set from a popular brand, the Dynamic Discs Prime Burst Disc Golf Starter Set.

What to know before buying a disc golf set

When comparing disc golf sets, take note of the number and type of discs included. Most sets are aimed at beginners and will include at least three versatile discs.

Putter

Honing your short game will save you a massive amount of shots over the years. A putter should be comfortable to hold and should fly fairly straight, floating as the strings approach the basket. Many disc golf manufacturers include their most popular putter in their sets.

medium disc

When you’re new to the sport, your midrange disc may be the disc you throw the most. It should fly very straight for short distances, but also be capable of throws like hyzers, rolls, and hard fades.

Driver

Arguably the most exciting drive of all sets, your driver is for power shots off the tee mat that will hopefully land in the center of the fairway or even near the basket. Most disc golf sets include a fairway driver – a low-speed driver that doesn’t need to be thrown with a lot of power for a smooth, predictable flight.

What to Look for in a Quality Disc Golf Set

Discs vary in their plastic quality and appearance, and each brand has its own range of plastics and its own selection of disc moulds.

Plastic quality

Most disc golf manufacturers offer different types of plastic. Often the discs in their sets are made from softer, less durable plastic, but some sets are made from stiffer plastic that will last for many years. Some brands even offer plastic discs with a swirl or tie-dye pattern.

disc golf brands

Although there are dozens of disc golf manufacturers, a handful of popular brands stand out for their quality and prolific offerings.

  • Innovation is an extremely popular brand known for its Champion and Star plastics, both of which are very durable and available in bright colors.
  • Discrafting has a smaller selection of molds than Innova, but many of its discs are popular with players of all skill levels, and it offers a wide range of plastics.
  • MVP The discs stand out with their distinctive black edges, made of a softer plastic that feels good against your hand and can take more beatings.
  • Latitude 64° is a Swedish brand offering a robust range of discs for all playing styles.

How much you can expect to spend on a disc golf set

The price of disc golf sets largely depends on the number of discs included. Most three-disc games cost around $20, while four- to six-disc games usually cost between $25 and $50.

Disc Golf Set FAQ

How many discs do you need to play disc golf regularly?

A. Any reliable three-disc set has you covered. However, if you find yourself wishing for discs that behave differently, the only limit is the size of your bag. Eight to 12 discs is usually a good number for an intermediate player.

How do I know when to use each disc type?

A. Typically, you use a driver on the tee pad, a midrange drive on the fairway, and a putter to approach the basket and, of course, put.

Is it more profitable to buy discs in a game?

A. Sets are almost always more affordable when considering the cost of each disc. Most individual discs cost between $8 and $20, so five discs in a $35 set is a budget option.
