GCSAA Launches Third Phase of Golf Course Environmental Profile Water Use Survey


Jason straka, ASGCA, of Dublin, Ohio, was elected president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects at the organization’s recent 75th annual meeting in Cleveland.

A Director with Fry / Straka Global Golf Course Design with Dana fry, ASGCA, Straka is dedicated to the environmental design of golf courses, his projects with Fry having won numerous environmental accolades.

Straka, originally from Northeast Ohio, developed and strengthened his commitment to environmental design while a student at Cornell University. In 1994, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture, followed in 1995 by a Masters in Professional Studies in Agriculture-Lawn Management, Agronomy and Environmental Studies of Golf Course Design. An active member of ASGCA, Straka served as chair of ASGCA’s education committee from its inception in 2012 until 2018, and was one of the youngest members ever elected to its executive committee in 2018.

“I am honored to serve ASGCA, my colleagues, the profession of golf course designer and the game of golf on ASGCA’s 75th anniversary,” said Straka. “While golf has seen a resurgence in recent times, we still find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic and politically divided times. It is my responsibility to continue the success of my predecessors, to lead where there is no roadmap, and to continue to help the golf industry grow and nurture the game. In addition, I I look forward to strengthening ASGCA’s influence by encouraging all qualified designers to participate and working even more closely with our industry partners.

A hallmark of Straka’s career has been to demonstrate her philanthropic commitment to educating others within the golf community. He has been an instructor in various professional institutions around the world, including the Graduate School of Industry and Environment at Kyungwon University (Seoul, South Korea), the Brazilian Golf Confederation, the Brazilian Organization of Superintendents , the Portuguese Greenskeepers Association, the Polish Golf Properties Conference, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Canadian Association of Golf Superintendents, the Canadian International Business Conference and the Golf Course Owners Association of America, among others.

Straka has taught courses at Cornell University, Purdue University, University of Idaho, and Delhi State University. He was also an assistant professor at Ohio State University for a decade.

Straka’s design portfolio, which includes courses for Fry / Straka as well as Hurdzan / Fry, includes dozens of projects including: Camelback Golf Club, Ambiente Course, Scottsdale, Arizona; Georgian Bay Club, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada; Los Robles Greens Golf Course, Thousand Oaks, CA; Shelter Harbor Golf Club, Westerly, Rhode Island; The Oaks Club, Heron Course, Osprey, Florida; Kenwood Country Club, Cincinnati; and Union League National Golf Club, Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey.

Straka will serve as ASGCA president until fall 2022.
