Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club Bids to Host 2023 National Championship

“We have hundreds of people playing the sport right now where it creates course saves every Saturday. It’s great to see so many people (going out) on the course.

Hosting the national championship would come straight after the club hosted its first major event which was the provincial championship last summer.

Bressey says the idea of hosting the tournament has drawn support from many local groups.

“We actually collected 14 letters of support from the city, county and other community organizations,” he said.

“We have a committee of ten people working on the development of this application file. We already have support from people who are looking to bring nationals here.

This year’s National Disc Golf Championship is being held in Prince Edward Island (PEI) and currently has 450 registrants.

Bressey adds that welcoming nationals could give a good economic boost to businesses in the city.

“If we can bring hundreds of players and their companions to Grande Prairie to not only play our courses, but stay at our hotels, eat at our restaurants and visit our retail stores, that’s a big boost for our region. .”

Although there is competition from other disc golf enthusiasts across the country, Bressey thinks they have created a compelling offer.

“I expect there will be some strong offers, but I think we have our own very strong offer. We not only have great land to present, but we have a whole community behind this bid. who wants to bring players here. I think we have a solid offer and I’m optimistic about our chances.

A national disc golf association will decide who will host the national championships.

Finalists will be announced in June and the winning entry will be announced on Canada Day.
