The Crookwell Golf Club’s annual golf club championships on Sunday came to a fitting end, after four days some of the greatest field club captains, Mark Smith, had seen. “It went really well, we had good numbers every four days,” Smith said. “We had an average of just over 50 for the four days. It’s phenomenal for us, compared to what we’ve experienced in previous years. Last Sunday, our last day, we had 30. or 28. We were delighted with that. ” The winners in all classes are as follows: The Championships were spread over two weeks, with one round per day for the last two weekends. There was high quality golf on display resulting in extremely close finishes across all categories. “There was some really good quality golf,” said Smith. “A Grade was won by Toby Johns, and he came into the final day with a six stroke lead, and he ended up with a one or two stroke lead with four or five strokes left.” But he managed to hang on. until the last hole and won with one stroke. Even more exciting was Ashley Gilbert’s Class B victory, which was decided by a total of four holes. The game was so tense that a large crowd gathered to watch the drama unfold. There were probably about 30 people who went on the course during the playoffs, ”Smith said. “They played holes one, two, six and seven, and they had a gallery with them during those four holes. It was a pretty awesome environment actually, especially for a small club like ours. “We actually got lucky,” Smith said. “It’s been so wet for so long, but we had some really good hot sunny days. It was good as the course was also really wet which gave it a chance to dry out. These are starting out. with the Crookburn Cup on November 20, which is played between golfers from Goulburn and Crookwell.
