Men’s golf set for another elite program in 2022-23

MALIBU, Calif. – After winning a national championship in 2021 and reaching the NCAA semifinals last spring, Pepperdine’s men’s golf team could field a very different team in 2022-23, but the elite schedule will remain the same as that of the head coach. Michael Beard announced the list of program tournaments for the next campaign.

“We feel very fortunate to be playing such a strong schedule again this year, including three regular season events on Golf Channel,” Beard said. “Our guys are excited to go out and face all the top varsity teams. Being able to travel around the country and experience different grasses and weather conditions is important in every player’s development. The strength of our schedule gives our players the best opportunity to maximize their various rankings, including the World Amateur Golf Rankings and the PGA Tour University.”

The Waves will head to the same set of tournaments as in 2021-22, highlighted by a third straight appearance in the exclusive East Lake Cup. Pepperdine’s Southwestern Invitational will be held Jan. 30-Feb. 1 at the North Ranch Country Club. Each of Pepperdine’s regular season tournaments had a power rating of over 800 points in the WAGR rankings last season.

The Waves will fire three players, two of whom were All-Americans (Derek Hitchner and Guillaume Mouw). Three graduate transfers and an incoming freshman will bolster the lineup.

Last season, Pepperdine qualified for the NCAA Semifinals and finished with the national ranking of #4 by Golfweek/Sagarin, #5 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll and #6 by Golfstat. Pepperdine won three tournaments, including his fourth straight West Coast Conference title and 21st overall, and had his best result at an NCAA regional, placing second in Bryan, Texas.
