Men’s golf set to compete in WAC Championships starting Friday
BOULDER CITY, Nevada –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Men’s Vaqueros Golf Team returns to action when they compete in the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships beginning Friday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The 54-hole event will feature 18 holes each day until Sunday. The first group on Friday will leave at 9:30 a.m.
Boulder Creek Golf Course plays 7,482 yards and is a par 72.
There will be a 10-team field which will include UTRGV, Sam Houston, Grand Canyon, Lamar, New Mexico State, Abilene Christian, Utah Valley, Seattle U, Stephen F. Austin, Chicago State and individuals from California Baptist and Dixie State.
The UTRGV closed out the regular season at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Rice, where they finished in 16e square.
The Vaqueros posted a score of 940 in three rounds after completing rounds of 322, 314 and 304.
Leonard Novella led the Vaqueros with a score of 234 in three rounds after posting rounds of 80, 77 and 77 as he finished tied for 58e.
Taj Sutherland finished in 70e with a three-round score of 238 with rounds of 80, 82 and 76.
Sebastien Lundberg finished tied for 83rd with a three-round score of 244 after carding rounds of 83, 84 and 77.
Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi tied for 87e with a three-round score of 246 after posting rounds of 79, 80 and 87.
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished in 94e after posting rounds of 75 and 74 in the second and third rounds.
Last time at WAC Championships
The Vaqueros finished in fourth place at the 2021 WAC Championships at Boulder Creek Golf Course.
UTRGV finished with a three-set score of 871 after posting innings of 284, 301, and 286. New Mexico State won the Tag Team Championship with a three-set score of 856 with innings of 273, 291 and 292.
Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi led the Vaqueros with a score of 213 in three rounds after posting rounds of 69, 74 and 70.
Luca Portelli finished tied for seventh with a three-round score of 214 after rounds of 68, 73 and 73.
Leonard Novella tied for 14e with a three-round score of 219 after carding rounds of 72, 75 and 72.
Euan Gill tied for 24e with a three-round score of 225 after posting rounds of 75, 79 and 71.
Alex Summers happened 34e with a three-round score of 233 with rounds of 75, 80 and 78.
Gabe Lysen of Utah Valley won the individual title with a score of 208 over three rounds.
Senior UTRGV Tennoshin Ogawa is looking to end his career on a high note as he competes in what could be the last tournament of his career at the WAC Championships.
Ogawa has appeared in 21 events since joining UTRGV in the fall of 2017 and has posted a career average of 75.4 shots.
Ogawa has one career win which came at LaTour Intercollegiate in the spring of 2019.
