Men’s golf set to kick off fall season Monday at Lone Star Invitational


SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros Men’s Golf Team kicks off its fall season by participating in the Lone Star Invitational, hosted by UTSA, starting Monday at TPC San Antonio.

The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

The TPC San Antonio Oaks course plays 7,435 yards and is a par 72.

The competition

There will be a 13 team field with: Houston Baptist, Lamar, Louisiana, State of New Mexico, Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin, Southeast Louisiana, State of Texas, Incarnate Word, UT Arlington, UT Martin , UTRGV and UTSA host.

Starting five

Last time at the Lone Star Invitational

The Lone Star Invitational was last played in 2019.

South Alabama won the tag team championship in 2019 with a three-round score of 873 after posting rounds of 285, 294 and 294. South Alabama finished tied with UT Arlington and Houston but won in the playoffs.

Lipscomb’s Nolan Ray won the individual title with a score of 207 in three rounds with rounds of 65, 69 and 73.

The Vaqueros did not participate in the Lone Star Invitational in 2019.

Programming Notes

Ogawa, who qualified first in the squad, will compete in his first tournament since taking part in the Colin Montgomerie Invitational in spring 2020.

De Bethencourt Duque and Sutherland will make their college debut this week.

Novella and Kanavathi return to the Vaqueros lineup after competing in all of the team’s events in the spring.


UTRGV will be back in action on October 4 when they participate in the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU, in Dallas.
