Navy Golf Set to Participate in Augusta Haskins Award Invitational

The Navy men’s golf team will compete for the second time in a week when they travel to Georgia this weekend to compete in the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational presented by Valspar. Co-hosted by the Augusta Golf Association and the Haskins Foundation, the two-day, 54-strike event is scheduled to begin Saturday morning at Forest Hills Golf Club (par 72/7,086 yards). The tournament kicks off with an 8:30 tee shot with 36 holes scheduled for Saturday.

• Navy is part of a 15-team field that stands out with 3 top-20 and 8 top-50 teams – #2 Oklahoma State, #12 Texas, #13 Notre Dame, #24 Illinois, #28 South Carolina, #35 North Florida, #37 Alabama, #45 Northwestern, #69 Central Florida, #97 Furman, #137 Chattanooga, #143 Augusta, #147 Mercer, #156 Georgia State and #237Navy (ranked via Golfstat at March 29).
• Oklahoma State is the defending champion, winning the 2021 tournament title with a par 827 of 37 under. Meanwhile, Ryan Hall of South Carolina took top honors with his par 202 14-under.

The lesson
Established in 1926, Augusta University’s Forest Hills is a much-loved fixture within the golf community of Augusta, Georgia. The 18-hole course was originally designed by world-renowned course architect Donald Ross and remodeled by the Arnold Palmer Company in 2003. Forest Hills is home to the Augusta University men’s and women’s golf teams. and became part of history again when the men’s team successfully defended their 2010 NCAA Division I national title to win their second consecutive national championship in 2011.

• The Navy participated in five events during the fall season, including the annual Army-Navy All-Star Game in which the Mids won in a spectacular 6-5 playoff game.
• Navy Fall Tournament record includes: 6th of 14 at Doc Gimmler / 7th of 16 at UConn Invitational at GreatHorse / 2nd of 12 teams at Georgetown Intercollegiate and 14th of 17 teams at ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
Nicolas Klock competed as an individual in the prestigious Jackson T. Stephens Cup where he finished with a par 231 of 15. The tournament featured six of the top 60 teams in the nation and Klock was one of six golfers who received a special invitation to play in the inaugural event.
• The Mids opened their spring ledger last Sunday playing The Hayt, which featured 13 teams ranked in the top 100 in the country. Team captain Chad Deegan paced the team with its mark of 231 in three rounds (80-73-78, +15) to place 69th.

The Navy will play its last tournament before the conference tournament when it travels to Pennsylvania for the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational on April 10-11. The Steel Club will be the host venue and will also host the 2022 Patriot League Championship which will run from April 29 to May 1.
