SJU Golf Set for This Weekend’s Minnesota Classic
Saint John’s returns to the Twin Cities for the Minnesota Golf Classic this Saturday-Sunday, September 11-12, at Pioneer Creek GC (par 72) in Maple Plain. – Live score
DEPARTURE HOURS: The first round is scheduled for a shotgun at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by 36 holes and a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
A LOOK AT JOHNNIES: Saint John’s started its 2021-2022 season on a high note with a tournament victory over 18 teams in the Augsburg Invitational Sept. 4-5 at the Majestic Oaks GC (par 72) in Ham Lake.
The Johnnies entered Sunday’s final round with a one-shot lead over Gustavus Adolphus and shot the second fastest lap of the day, a par 289, to take first place by three shots over the Gusties (+18,594 ) with a 591 (+15). The Nebraska Wesleyan clocked a 288 par Sunday to climb eight places to third place at 605 (+29).
Four Johnnies finished in the top 11. Sophomore Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) led the way with a two-round total of 145 (+1) to claim second out of 100 golfers, his third in the top five in seven career events. Loxtercamp, junior Thomas gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) And second year Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.) Collected 73 (+1) on Sunday. Gutzmer is tied for fifth (+3, 147), his fifth among the top five in 11 career events, and Schugel is ranked 11th (+6, 150).
Second year Sam berger (Waconia, Minn.) Led SJU’s 10 golfers on Sunday with a par of 2 under par 70 to finish 10th (+5, 149). He went 3 under his first 12 holes, thanks to three consecutive birdies on the nos 5-7.
Second year Nate bauer (Andover, Minn.) Led SJU Blue, who was tied with Bethel University for seventh place (+45, 621), with a par 76 of 4 and a total of 153 (+9) in two rounds to rank 17th.
WHO WILL BE THERE: In addition to SJU (two teams) and Bethel (two teams), other schools expected to compete this weekend include Augsburg (two teams), Carleton, Gustavus Adolphus (two teams), Luther (Iowa), Macalester, St. Olaf and Wisconsin -Eau Claire (two teams). People from a number of Division I programs will also be in the field: Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kent State, Marquette, Notre Dame, Rutgers, St. Thomas and West Virginia.
THE SJU RANGE: SJU is due to send these 10 golfers (two teams) to Maple Plain this weekend.

The first round is scheduled for tee times starting at noon Saturday at St. Cloud CC, followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start Sunday at Blackberry Ridge GC in Sartell.
