Start of construction of the Merewether Golf Club retirement residence project
The joint venture between ThirdAge and the club will be known as The Merewether. It will house 148 one-, two- and three-bedroom luxury apartments in four- and six-story complexes, and will include 16 penthouses with rooftop spa terraces overlooking the golf course.
ThirdAge manager Luke Berry welcomed the move which will benefit the club and the community, and explained that the project will bring a much needed new retirement lifestyle to the interior of Newcastle. The resort-style community will include a lap pool, cinema, gym, workshop, communal kitchen and craft rooms. The golf club and community members will benefit from a new clubhouse, catering facilities, sports bar and wellness center for its members and apartment residents.
“The project will create over 1,000 construction jobs and nearly 100 ongoing jobs, which is great news for the local economy as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. Merewether is all about enjoying the best of Newcastle lifestyle and community, with a concierge, resident events such as gala dinners and cooking, yoga and pilates classes, and, of course, the magnificent Merewether Golf Club championship is on the residents’ doors, ”said Berry.

ThirdAge will go out to tender for construction soon and hopes to have residents in their new homes by mid-2024. Merewether Golf Club provides a 99-year lease of the development course, with President Phil Merrigan explaining that the project will help secure the long-term financial future of the club, and keep Merewether Golf Club accessible to members, community golfers, and visitors to the area to enjoy.
“This project provides funds to support significant investments in the golf course and club infrastructure and facilities. We have been able to realize our vision of a world class golf facility and retreat neighborhood without having to downsize the course, ”said Merrigan.
The commission approved the concept plans and issued a site compatibility certificate for the project in May 2020. This allowed ThirdAge to submit a Development Application (DA) to the City of Newcastle, where council reviewed the DA and recommended that the project be approved by the commission. . Club members approved the project in 2018.
On October 20 of this year, ThirdAge hosted a “The Future of Hunter’s Retirement” webinar. Targeting those over 55, the webinar was the first of its kind and brought together 600 participants. The session covered topical issues such as costs involved in moving into a development for over 55s, DMF, retirement, investing, comparing upgrading to an existing home , non-invasive technology and its evolution, everything you need to know about the process. buying and selling, how to leverage brand trust in the community and bond with the community.
“The perception of the over-55s category is no longer a retirement home environment. People expect more, they want more, and they’re looking for better lifestyle options, a resort lifestyle, non-invasive technology and a sense of community, ”says Berry.
While local downsizers, especially members of the Merewether Golf Club, lead the inquiries, ThirdAge also receives a large number of inquiries from Sydneysiders looking to retire in a scenic setting away from the city. With so much to choose from for those over 55, ThirdAge recognizes that properties in prime locations – especially those that are still accessible in Sydney if a visit is required – yet truly seem a world apart in terms of proximity to the city. nature and the coast, will stimulate demand.
ThirdAge, a division of Sydney-based developer Third.i, will manage the apartments. Third.ia successfully delivered large scale residential projects in Sydney and Newcastle. The latter includes projects in the West, Eaton on Union and Stella on Hannell Apartments in Wickham. The group currently has a development pipeline worth more than $ 2.5 billion.
