Start of construction of the Merewether Golf Club retirement residence project


The joint venture between ThirdAge and the club will be known as The Merewether. It will house 148 one-, two- and three-bedroom luxury apartments in four- and six-story complexes, and will include 16 penthouses with rooftop spa terraces overlooking the golf course.

ThirdAge manager Luke Berry welcomed the move which will benefit the club and the community, and explained that the project will bring a much needed new retirement lifestyle to the interior of Newcastle. The resort-style community will include a lap pool, cinema, gym, workshop, communal kitchen and craft rooms. The golf club and community members will benefit from a new clubhouse, catering facilities, sports bar and wellness center for its members and apartment residents.

ThirdAge will go out to tender for construction soon and hopes to have residents in their new homes by mid-2024. Merewether Golf Club provides a 99-year lease of the development course, with President Phil Merrigan explaining that the project will help secure the long-term financial future of the club, and keep Merewether Golf Club accessible to members, community golfers, and visitors to the area to enjoy.

“This project provides funds to support significant investments in the golf course and club infrastructure and facilities. We have been able to realize our vision of a world class golf facility and retreat neighborhood without having to downsize the course, ”said Merrigan.

The commission approved the concept plans and issued a site compatibility certificate for the project in May 2020. This allowed ThirdAge to submit a Development Application (DA) to the City of Newcastle, where council reviewed the DA and recommended that the project be approved by the commission. . Club members approved the project in 2018.
