Utah State Golf Prepares For 25th Annual CSUN Bill Cullum Tournament
The tournament, which moved to the Oaks Club in Valencia after 25 years at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, started with a practice round on Sunday, followed by 36 holes on Monday and an 18-hole final on Tuesday.
Along with the Aggies and hosts Matadors, the 12-team field consists of Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Marcos, Hawai’i, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Utah Valley and Weber State.
Scheduled to compete this week for the Aggies are seniors Cameron Tucker (No. 1), first year student Esteban Jaramillo (n ° 2), senior Jesse henderson (No. 3), and second year students Javier Vazquez (N ° 4) and Purin Yingpisit. (No.5). Redshirt second year Spencer panter will compete as an individual.
Utah State won the 2017 Bill Cullum Invitational with a team score of 16 under 848. The Aggies, who had four golfers in the top 15, claimed a two-stroke victory over second-place UC Santa Barbara. who finished with a 14-under 850 (279-286-285).
The Aggies placed sixth in the 12-team field after their first round of 3 of 291, before shooting the tournament’s lowest tag team round with a 276 under 12 in the second round. The USU then moved from second place to first place on the final day of competition with their final round of 7 under 281.
The Oaks Club of Valencia, designed by PGA TOUR Design Services in collaboration with two-time major champion Mark O’Meara, offers 18 holes of challenging and breathtaking play. With breathtaking views of the Santa Clarita Valley, the Par 72 Championship course is expected to be played at 7,115 yards.
The 25-year-old tournament recently changed its name to Bill Cullum Invitational in honor of legendary men’s golf coach CSUN.
In previous years the tournament was called The Countrywide Invitational, and in 2006 was renamed The Bill Cullum / Countrywide Invitational. Cullum coached the Matador Men’s Team from 1965 to 1986, winning three NCAA Division II golf championships and finishing second twice. He was named NCAA College Division Coach of the Year in 1969 and District Eight Coach of the Year in 1970 and 1971.
